Mushroom Cheese"steak" — A Vegetarian Sub That Doesn't Compromise
Truffle-roasted mushrooms, melted provolone, cacio e pepe sauce, caramelized onions, and roasted red peppers on house-baked semolina bread.
Sandwell's Mushroom Cheese"steak" is built around truffle-roasted mushrooms with the kind of deep, earthy umami that makes this vegetarian sandwich pack a massive punch of flavor. Layered with melted provolone, our house-made cacio e pepe sauce, slowly caramelized onions, and roasted red peppers — all on semolina bread we bake in-house and cold-proof for 24+ hours. It's got the soul of an old-school cheesesteak but there’s a whole lot more going on under the surface.
The mushrooms are inspired by the venerable cèpes à la bordelaise, one of founder Andy Gottlieb’s favorite dishes that showcases the bounty of foraged mushrooms. We marinate our mushroom medley mix with shallots, parsley, garlic & porcini powder, roast them in olive oil to concentrate the flavor, and then toss them while still hot with a truffled dressing to absorb the decadently truffled essence into the very pores of the mushrooms.
These truffled roasted mushrooms are then nestled on top of our signature cacio e pepe sauce that we make fresh in-house. We still aren’t sure if it’s alchemy, because these meaty mushrooms combine with the sharp, peppery, cheesy sauce and then meld into a transformative complex experience unlike any other. Then they get topped with the classic cheesesteak fixins of slowly caramelized onions, marinated roasted red peppers, and sharp provolone melted on top. Our house-baked semolina sub roll holds everything together without getting soggy.
Old-school, modern, and absolutely forking delicious. We put "steak" in quotes because there's no steak here — and we don't think you'll miss it, as we’re sure you haven’t met a cheesesteak or cheese”steak” quite like ours before. It's rich, it's satisfying, and it's healthyish in the best way — built around vegetables and real ingredients, never pretending to be something it's not.
Whether you're a vegetarian who's tired of boring options, a mushroom lover on the Upper West Side or near Gramercy, or a die-hard cheesesteak fan who loves a delicious sub when you’re hungry — the Mushroom Cheese"steak" is for you.
